  • 1.  Whirlpool size

    looking into having a new whirlpool built. 
    this design will have a vertically facing dome on the bottom and wort will be drawn out at the low point. 
    the designer will size the vessel according to my needs so I'm curious about hop loads on such a design. 
    I would like to ability to use 1-lb per barrel in the whirlpool (but maybe more) any idea on total vessel diameter vs hop capacity on such a design?

    Largest batch would be 25 bbls cast out to FV. Smallest would be 10bbl

    Hi Michael,
    The "rule of thumb" I use is max 2 kg hops per square meter surface area for a traditional Whirlpool.

    Also worth mentioning, in my experience, you certainly can exceed 2 kg pellets/m2. But in that case, you need a standpipe, racking arm and/or an in-line filter to trap hop material that drags out during wort cool. Unfortunately, you have to accept higher losses. As you know, that's why highly hopped beers benefit from T-45 or even hop extract.
