  • 1.  Roller Mill Stagger

    Hi Everyone! 

    My question today is regarding the popular RMS 9X6 single pair roller mill. I wanted to know if anyone has ever had their rollers drift left or right. We were doing a routine V-plate replacement with parallel when we discovered our forward roller had drifted to the left a significant amount (creating a gap that would allow whole kernels to slip past). Has anyone experienced this before? How were you able to knock the roller back into center? Thanks in advance for your help!

    We have the double pair RMS mill and the rollers will get out of parallel occasionally.  We just parallel and zero our mill rollers ever other week.  It takes 5-10 minutes and is a good practice to get in the habit of.  I am not sure if this is the problem you are having but it seems like it.  How to parallel your rollers this video makes it super simple to do.  you can send me a DM and I will get a hold of you to answer any questions that you may have with this.  I hope it helps

    Hey Landon,

    Yup, we're pretty familiar with the zero and parallel procedure. Our issue is the roller (and shaft) have shifted within their bearings and collars. A zero and parallel have not had an impact on the stagger of the rollers. We're pretty stumped how this could've happened.

    Hey Eddie, 

    We have a four roller RMS. We grease, zero and parallel it bi-weekly. We also check belts and pulleys monthly. 

    Have you checked the belt alignment and belt tension? It sounds like the roller+pulley are out of alignment and one of the bearings on that roller failed. It's also possible that the roller is worn down?

    Hi Eddie, we replaced our rollers and bearings on our 9x6 single last year and I seem to remember when we took the old rollers off a few of the grub screws for the collars that hold the roller shaft in place had worked themselves out or where missing.  The collars with the grub screws are between the big blue flange bearing and the belt pulley.  I would look there first and then check all the big bolts on the flange bearings.  You also might have a bearing that is going out and needs to be replaced.  Good luck!
