I am looking at trying out Pika Fast Orange bouillon broth to do some routine testing of green beer to scan for wild yeast and diastaticus infections. Does anyone have any experience with this product and/or any methods of testing with this product they find works best?

    Thanks,

I don't have experience with Pika Fast Orange but you may want to reach out to Jasper Yeast--I have a feeling they will give you solid guidance.

    Hi Andrew,

We used Pika Fast Orange B Bouillon for a few years. We also trialed the Fast Orange Wild Yeast Broth but found we would get growth on some in-house yeast strains.

For us, we found it gave more questions than answers. We trialed NBB-B side by side with Pika and I appreciated Pika being a bit darker giving more color change than NBB. However, NBB was better at arresting yeast growth, which often resulted in color change for us (at which point we found we had to do serial dilutions of all beer samples that were not yet at terminal gravity).

Ultimately, as our primary use for Pika was to spot lactic acid producing bacteria, we reverted back to HLP.  In a small, one-person lab With a microscope, Fast Orange has the benefit of saving time on media prep. Some methods recommended to us included a soft centrifuge spin to remove excess yeast.

As For Green Beer specifically, we hold samples in the incubator for up to 3 days and check for any bubbles, growth, change in gravity, and pH drop. If any of those situations occur, we move to plating.

We also start media; day 1 of fermentation, day 7 or Pre-tank addition and/or yeast harvest, and then again 3 days after any tank addition, Brite tanks, and small packs.

Currently running LCSM, WLN, and HLP for daily micro checks. WLD, LMDA w/cycloheximide for follow up micro. NBB-Am for environmental swabs, and we just got some UBA to trial.

I hope you find any of that useful,

    Cheers.
