  • 1.  PAA and lenticular filter

    Posted 08-05-2022 11:26
    Hello all,

We have some cider that won't clear up and I want to use our lenticular filter to clear it up.  However we don't have a supply of properly hot water.  I'm not sure what the previous folks have done to ensure the filter is sanitary.  I am inquiring if PAA is safe enough to use to sanitize the filter and lines.  I am fairly experienced with using a lenticular filter, but I have always had a source of super hot water.
    Thanks for any insights.

Good question David. I would think the issue would be in removing the PAA thoroughly before beer/cider to avoid DO, so maybe flush with DA water?

    Hi David,

You should definitely check with the manufacturer of the filter modules you intend to use in the housing. We have used Pall filter modules and have been told a few times that they are not compatible with PAA. Hot water or steam before use.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

    Eric

    Hey David,

If you are using a single use filter for this filtration, Water + PAA will be just fine. As Chris mentioned, you will want to rinse it out and CO2 purge. Or use some cider then dump it to prevent DO pickup.

If you are re-using back-flushable Lenticulars, I would urge a bit more caution and a more thorough cleaning based upon manufacturer recommendations.

Did you do a alcohol pectin test to make sure there isn't any pectin in there? Pectin is just going to gum up filters and your flow will drop to almost nothing. Alcohol pectin test is very easy to do in a test tube, I would recommend confirming a negative on that before going into filtration.
