  • 1.  Maximum allowable PPM Chlorine in Brewing Water

    I am trying to find a reference giving the maximum allowable ppm of chlorine in brewing water to establish some standards for charcoal renewal in our water filter, but all the texts I have checked just mention the need to process brewing liquor with a carbon filter to remove chlorine without giving any standards.  Does anyone have such a reference from a documented source?

    That's a great question. I am also interested in this info as I typically use 1ppm as our internal standard to replace the filters, but I have no reference for that standard.

    We have used Hach test kits over the years to test for Chlorine and schedule re-bedding of our charcoal filters when chlorine is detected at the lowest threshold.  We encountered some issues with phenols creeping into our ales when we let chlorine levels exceed the lowest detectable level from these kits.
