  • 1.  Lauter Speed in 4 roller mill

    Posted 07-19-2023 15:07

We are going through a cellar expansion and, as part of the process, are upgrading our 10 year old Engl 2 roller mill. We are considering a 4 roller mill for overall efficiency improvements, but was curious if anyone who went through a similar upgrade found any change in lautering speed with a more efficient grind. I assume the change is only to uniformity and would not create a noticeable change in lautering time, but thought I'd put it to the group for feedback. I appreciate any insight!

    Hey Marcus,

What is your current brewhouse yield (% compared to laboratory) and typical wort recovery rate?  A new malt mill should improve both, but then again you may have great numbers already.

    Cheers,

    Ashton

Just wanted to share Andy Tveekrem's post from the cross listed post in Ask the Brewmasters for anyone following just this Great Plains thread:

"I did just such an upgrade about 15 years ago from an old Rosskamp 2 roll mill to a Kunzel 4 roll mill. Wort quality improved, clarity improved, lauter time improved, extract improved, employee morale improved, etc. You will be happy you did so. I suggest getting some sieves to dial it in, even if you just borrow them."

Also I replied in the other thread to Ashton as I thought cross posting would land in both spots! Here was my reply:

We are running in the high 80% range for average gravity brews (per Ashton's own spreadsheet!) with a collection time of approximately 90 minutes. Thanks for the feedback, all! Always appreciated!
