  • 1.  Lauter Speed in 4 roller mill

    Posted 07-19-2023 15:52

We are going through a cellar expansion and, as part of the process, are upgrading our 10 year old Engl 2 roller mill. We are considering a 4 roller mill for overall efficiency improvements, but was curious if anyone who went through a similar upgrade found any change in lautering speed with a more efficient grind. I assume the change is only to uniformity and would not create a noticeable change in lautering time, but thought I'd put it to the group for feedback. I appreciate any insight!

    Hi Marcus,

I did just such an upgrade about 15 years ago from an old Rosskamp 2 roll mill to a Kunzel 4 roll mill. Wort quality improved, clarity improved, lauter time improved, extract improved, employee morale improved, etc. You will be happy you did so. I suggest getting some sieves to dial it in, even if you just borrow them.

    Cheers,

    Andy

We are running in the high 80% range for average gravity brews (per Ashton's own spreadsheet!) with a collection time of approximately 90 minutes. Thanks for the feedback, all! Always appreciated!

    Hi Michael,

Attached is a copy of the spreadsheet you asked about.  There is data in the sheet shown as an example.

    Cheers,

    Ashton

You should be able to move your yield up into the 90's without much risk of extending wort recovery time.  Agree with Andy's recommendation about the sieves except you should splurge on buying a set and making grist evaluation part of your QC routine.  Hadn't thought about how a new mill can improve morale!

    Cheers,

    Ashton

We do have the sieves, but admittedly haven't regularly used them through the years. We are certainly dusting them off for this transition! I like the idea of having regular grist evaluation.
