  • 1.  Electrical Question | cUL/UL reciprocity

    Posted 05-21-2025 22:11

    Hey all,

We're looking at some used equipment that was installed in a Canadian facility and is certified as cUL. Does this need to be re-certified in the US for UL? Looking online I am seeing mixed results with some saying they are reciprocal while others say they are similar but different.

I've been in contact with the OEM to answer many questions but they intentionally will not clarify this point. I am aware of the other challenges regarding power - the equipment in question is 575V, 60hz so will need a transformer step up from our plant's 480V but thankfully not a frequency conversion.

    Thanks!

    Hello Campbell,

I am from the Canadian side. Although, I can not give you the answer, from my past experience it would be the best to speak with your local jurisdiction and certified engineer. Talking to other brewers and equipment manufactures is a good way but you may not get the right answer; learned from many experience in the past.

An equipment is listed in cUL/UL could mean components or the whole unit meets the standard. The former could be an issue in Ontario in some cases.

In Ontario, our Electrical Safe Authority does everything about meeting the electrical code and Technical Standards and Safety Authority does everything about the boiler and pressure vessels. These two are the most relevant authorities to brewery equipment no matter the size of a brewery.

    Best Regards,

    Hi Cambell

I advise speaking to your City electrical inspector to see what they will accept.

    Cheers,
