    Hello,

In the process of opening a brewery and we are looking to select a CO2 supplier and set up our CO2 system. We are a 10bbl brewery starting with an on-site only model and located in Georgia. I know we want beverage grade and asking for COAs but would love an insight on what to look for in a supplier, any recommendations on the setup, and/or what to make sure what is in our contract.

    Thanks so much!

    Hi Erin!

I didn't negotiate our CO2 contract when it was enacted, but I've had to learn a thing or two with recent CO2 industry woes. I would look to see what the stipulations are for a force-majeure situation where the supplier can't get you your CO2. It seems like smaller breweries are usually the ones who get a raw deal first just due to the relatively low quantity sold. I'd also look around to see what the cost difference would be for purchasing your own tank vs leasing a bulk tank vs going with cylinders or other mobile storage. All of these things depend on what your consumption per bbl packaged would look like, as you may see more upfront cost with one solution rather than another. Any supplier should be able to provide you with an ISBT gas analysis report prior to signing as well.

Hey Erin! Nice to see another brewery opening in Georgia instead of closing!

CO2 can definitely be a pain. I've been through several companies in my 30 years brewing here. I could sit here and gripe about the bad ones, but it's much better to tell you about the good one.

I've been using Easy CO2 (Sidnee Lee) for many years now and have been really pleased with them. They're family owned and great to work with. I'd highly recommend them.

Best of luck with your brewery! I'll have to get out to see you!

    Hey Erin,

You have some good good advice coming through in the thread.  Although this is not contract related, I think it is good to mention CO2 quality.  One thing we do is taste our CO2 twice a week.  We slowly bubble CO2 through about 500mL of water.  When we taste the water, this gives us a pretty good idea if there are any off flavors or oil in our supply.  It is not perfect, but certainly insightful.  While most breweries do not sterile filter their CO2, I have seen instances where CO2 headers can become contaminated with beer spoiling, anaerobic microbes.  CO2 header cleanliness is just as important as everywhere else!
