The May 2024 meeting of your Board of Governors was held on May 21st.
President's Report
President Lauren Torres of Anton Paar called the meeting to order and provided a memoriam to two members.
BRU Coalition Update
The Coalition, was founded in 2021, by industry groups to foster an equitable and inclusive brewing community.
Initial goals set have all been met (e.g. offering reporting systems for their members, codes of conduct implemented, providing ongoing training for leadership of each organization, compiling, and sharing tools of best practices).
The coalition will continue and additional updates will be shared when available.
Executive Committee
Members of the Executive Committee plans to visit District functions, either in-person or virtually.
Nominating Committee
Immediate Past President Doug Wilson* of Hopsteiner presented the following slate:
- Molly Browning (Lallemand), President
- Brian Faivre (New Realm Brewing), 1st Vice President
- Steve Bradt* (Hopsteiner), 2nd Vice President
- Lauren Torres (Anton Paar), Immediate Past President
- Marcus Powers (Zipline Brewing), Treasurer
- Ben Bailey (Troegs Brewing), Treasurer-elect
*Please note that nominee Steve Bradt recused himself from the Nominating Committee this year and that Doug recused himself from voting since they both work at Hopsteiner.
The Board of Governors will vote on this slate on the September 17, 2024 virtual call.
Financial Report
Budget - Treasurer Marcus Powers of Zipline Brewing Co provided us a brief financial report.
On March 31, 2024, the organization had a net operating loss of approximate $23,906. However, MBAA's revenues trended slightly above budget with a few variances.
World Brewing Congress (WBC) - any net gain (loss) is shared between MBAA and ASBC. The final numbers are not reflected in MBAA financials until the meeting has been finalized.
District Health & Leadership Training
District Dashboard
- Provides 24/7 information, accessible through District Officer role.
District Health Task Force
Developing best practices for the following:
- Welcoming members, renewing lapsed members
- Preparing guidelines for equitable partnerships as we are seeing Districts partnering with organizations (e.g. state guilds).
- Developing a manual of operation template for Districts to use for procedural items that should not be included in bylaws.
- Providing advice for districts with large financial reserves to ensure it's in alignment with non-profit legalities.
District Officer Leadership Training
MBAA would like to connect district activities to the overall strategic priorities of the organization. Starting this fall, MBAA will provide leadership training to district officers. This will include:
- Providing tools to aid in officer onboarding/orientation to provide smoother transitions
- Discuss other platform options to aid in district collaboration
- Develop connections for officers to focus on similar outcomes
- How to lead strategically & collaboratively, communicating effectively.
World Brewing Congress (WBC) 2024
August 17-20, Minneapolis Convention Center, Minneapolis, MN. Official hotel is the Hilton Minneapolis.
Registration is Open, Advance rate good through 7/1/2024. Various program details, including preempting events, keynotes, show floor and post-meeting content library.
New to WBC this year: WBC Core Concepts that targets these topics: analytical/data collection, brewing/malting process, food safety
