    The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released their prospective plantings and grain stocks reports today which highlighted a 22% increase in stocks from the same time in 2022, but is only estimating potential acreage of 99% from the 2022 actual planted acreage.

    Stocks: 

    Barley stocks in all positions on March 1, 2023 totaled 88.7  million bushels, up 22 percent from March 1, 2022. On-farm stocks are estimated at 36.7 million bushels, 45 percent  above a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 52.0 million bushels, are 9 percent above March 2022. The December 2022 - February 2023 indicated disappearance totaled 26.6 million bushels, 9 percent above the same period a year earlier.

     

    Prospective Plantings: 

    Producers intend to seed 2.92 million acres of barley for the 2023 crop year, down 1 percent from the previous year. In Montana, the largest barley State, acreage is expected to increase by 6 percent, from last year. Record low barley acres are expected in California, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and South Dakota.
