At 5:15 pm, President, Jace Marti, called the Scholarship Drive meeting to order.

New members and guests and were asked to stand up and introduce themselves, 10 new members/guests were in attendance.

No Honorary Lifetime members were in attendance.

Meeting hosts, Buhler Inc., were thanked for hosting the meeting and providing dinner. 

Secretary, Riley Seitz, reported the past meeting minutes from the Election Meeting held at Bad Weather.

Treasurer, Juno Choi, read the treasurer’s report for year end.

  • 2018 Financial Review is posted on district website.

Requests for Condolences - There were none.

Committee Reports

  • Technical Committee: Members were reminded to fill out member survey on technical presentation ideas and topics. Members interested in helping with the technical committee should reach out to Matt Hall (mhall@bevsource.com). Reminder that the MBAA Podcast and the Technical Quarterly are both great resources for technical brewing information.
  • BOG: Eric Harper had reported that there was no activity since last meeting.
  • Golf Committee: Jeff Malek has stepped down from the Golf Committee Chair, our district is looking for a new chair. If interested, please reach out to Jace Marti (jace@schellsbrewery.com). Chair is responsible for coordinating the Golf Meeting location in August.
  • Membership Committee: Benson Jahnke announced that we had a significant drop in membership with expiring memberships in the new year. 197 current members: 175 from MN, 15 from WI, 5 from Iowa, 1 from ND. 5 new members since December. We are now 14th (previously 9th) largest district, behind New York.
  • Scholarship Committee: Tyrone Babione shared our district’s scholarship progess. In 2017, we handed out 1 scholarship, 2018 we gave away 6 scholarships, hoping for more this year. There is a new scholarship application process in 2019. Deadline for applications is mid-April. Scholarship winners will be announced at the Starkeller in May.
    • Indeed We Can: Many thanks to Indeed and Daniel Stavig for helping us organize the event. Taproom sales totaled $540, Rahr Malting matched the contribution for a total of $1080. The silent auction brought in over $900.
    • Yearly recurring sponsor Minnetonka Brewing Equipment, donate $1 of every keg they sell to members.
    • Buhler Inc. sponsored the meeting’s dinner, so 100% of meeting fees went to the scholarship fund.
    • A second silent auction was held at the meeting with items from allied trade members.
    • Many thanks to Rich O’Reskie and Oxion for donating $1000 to the Scholarship Fund!

Old Business-

  • 2018 Officer Election was held at Bad Weather Brewing Company, Riley Seitz was elected to the board and is now the District Secretary.
  • Fabulous Pig Roast

New Business-

  • Miz is nominated to be the MBAA History Chair! The board has copies of district meeting notes from the early 1900s written in long, cursive German handwriting. Miz offered to translate meetings notes in the old books.
  • August meeting will be at Mighty Axe Hops, date TBD. Will also coordinate with the Golf Meeting.
  • Josh Havill from the University of Minnesota asked members to support MN hop research by writing a letter of support for funding. If interested in learning more, contact havil008@umn.edu.
  • Schell’s/Starkeller meeting will be May 16th in New Ulm. The technical presentation will be at Starkeller, followed by dinner and social hour at the Schell’s brewery
  • July 26th is All Pint’s North weekend, and the joint technical and business conference with the Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild.
  • Next year is World Beer Congress in Minneapolis. Looking forward to setting up events in the MN brewing community.
