Technical Presentation: Lager Brewing: History, Methods and Raw Ingredients. Panelists:
Greg Casey: Graduating from the University of Saskatchewan in 1984 with a Molson’s sponsored Ph.D. titled Ethanol Tolerance of Brewer’s Yeast in High Gravity Brewing, since then he has held positions with Carlsberg Research Laboratories (1984-1986), Anheuser-Busch, Inc. (1987-1991); Stroh (1992-1999) and Coors, Molson Coors and MillerCoors (1999-2013). In retirement Greg’s passion has been researching the 1840s-1940s history of the American lager brewing industry, which in partnership with the MBAA (beginning with the release of the first two volumes in late 2023) is being published as a five-volume series titled The Inspiring History and Legacies of American Lager Beer.
Ashleigh Carter: Owner/Brewer at Bierstadt Lagerhaus. Her former roles include brewer at Prost Brewing Company and Dry Dock Brewing Company.
Mary-Jane Maurice (MJ): Long-term veteran of the malting industry. In 31 years with Malteurop she progressed from Bench Chemist to Director of Technical Services. Mary-Jane’s proudest achievement was being the first American to be awarded the Master Maltster designation from the Maltsters’ Association of Great Britain in 2004, a title held by very few people in the world. She has taught for many different groups, including the MBAA, Siebel Institute, Northern Crops Institute, UC-Davis, and breweries in Mexico, South Korea, and South Africa. Teaching has been one of the favorite parts of her career. She also has held multiple leadership roles in the American Malting Barley Association as well as the Brewing and Malting Barley Research Institute in Canada. MJ is currently serving as the Technical Advisor to the new Black Frost Distilling Company in New Ulm, MN.
Jace Marti: Co-Founder and Master Distiller at Black Frost Distilling. His experience and education includes Assistant Brewmaster at August Schell Brewing Company (2011-2021), internships with Trumer Privatbrauerei (2011) and Brauerei Wagner Kemmern (2011), and Certified Brewmaster Course from VLB Berlin.
